February 18, 2019 – Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse – Maine

I apologize as I am slightly behind with my blogging over the last couple days, but am slowly catching up!! On February 18, 2019 Shadow, Wilma, My Mom, and I Adventured to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in Portland, Maine. The Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is a working lighthouse located along a breakwater in the Casco Bay. It was built in 1897, while improvements and updates have been made since that time. It is open to the public for tours.

We had a chilly, yet spectacular Adventure to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, one of our many stops on our two day Maine getaway. (most of which I’ve already blogged about but some new Adventures too). I was excited to find a lighthouse that I had not yet visited, and that also provided a close-up view. Being off-season we were lucky to have the entire site to ourselves. We began our Adventure cautiously as the paths were again ice covered, and quite slippery. There were benches along the water, the view of the Lighthouse off in the distance. We walked toward the breakwater, however my Mom soon decided to head back to the car to warm-up.

Upon starting on the breakwater I soon realized that Shadow was not feeling inspired by the rocks, and slight spaces between them. We headed back to the car and my Mom agreed to sit in the warm car with Shadow while myself and my rock-loving Wilma hustled back to the breakwater eager for our close-up view. Wilma was thrilled for some rock jumping. It was a bit frigid, although Wilma appeared to keep warm from her athletic jumps. Luckily the rocks were not icy, but had some scenic snow here and there, adding a picturesque scene for photographs. We carefully planned our jumps, some requiring steps, while others leaps as we hustled down the embankment.

It was thrilling to arrive at the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, a lovely structure. We did not spend much time at the end, as we knew Shadow and My Mom were waiting for our return. However, it was definitely worth this short visit.

I love an Adventure that is not simple, but yet requires some work to arrive at the final destination Definitely a wonderful Adventure – Thanks to Mom for allowing us to partake in this Adventure, while providing Shadow comfort and warmth (Rating: 5).

Throwback Adventure – Stonington Harbor Lighthouse – Connecticut

I will have sections of my blog that I will title “Throwback Adventure”, and will plan on posting them every Thursday. These are journeys we have taken before I started the blog, but are well worth sharing. Many of these Throwback Adventures will include our Buster, who was known for his crazy tail, his happy howl, and his zest for life. We miss him dearly…he is forever in our hearts!

In January 2017 Shadow and I Adventured to the Stonington Harbor Lighthouse in Stonington, Connecticut. The Lighthouse was built in 1840. It no longer is a working Lighthouse, but is now open as a museum.

We had a special Adventure to the Stonington Lighthouse, one of our many stops on a fun-filled day of exploring. My throwback memories are not always as vivid as I hope they would be, however I remember enjoying the visit on a frigid day. The Lighthouse was in a little harbor neighborhood. It was surprisingly made of stone, quite the charming structure. We posed for some photographs and ambled around for a bit. We were pleased to have the entire spot to ourselves, definitely an off season perk. Always a special day with my Shadow.

January 6, 2019 – Chandler Hovey Park/Marblehead Lighthouse – Massachusetts

Today we Adventured to Chandler Hovey Park, also referred to as Lighthouse Point. This Park is known for being the location of the Marblehead Lighthouse. Marblehead Lighthouse was built in 1896, and is a 105 foot cast iron skeletal tower. It is the only one of this type in New England. The Park is less then four acres total, cornered by gorgeous ocean views. It has benches, pavilions and numerous rocks for climbing.

We were lucky to have three little Adventures in Marblehead today. The Chandler Hovey Park was one of our stops. This was our second Adventure to the Chandler Hovey Park and Marblehead Lighthouse, as we had been there before with Shadow and my Mom. This is a small park that provides absolutely stunning views from Marblehead Neck. We were lucky to choose yet another sunny, and breezy winter day, clouds perfectly aligned in the bright blue sky. Both Shadow and Wilma were enthused at this location enjoying lots of grass rolls, and play. We walked around the park enjoying the picturesque sky, crashing waves, and rough rocks. We posed continually with the Marblehead Lighthouse, as you will see below! It was the prefect kind of day at this special location (Rating: 4).

December 10, 2018 – Winter Island Park (Includes Fort Pickering Lighthouse) – Massachusetts

Yesterday Shadow, Wilma and I Adventured to Winter Island Park in Salem, Massachusetts. This is the second time Shadow and I have visited this Park, while the first trip for Wilma. Winter Island Park encompasses: camping opportunities, Waikiki Beach, Fort Pickering and the Historic Fort Pickering Lighthouse. Fort Pickering is a 17th Century Fort which was the coastal defense and military barracks for Salem Harbor. Fort Pickering Lighthouse was later built adjacent to the Fort in 1871.

We had a refreshing Adventure to Winter Island Park on a sunny Winter day. Shadow and I had been to the Park once before, and I soon had memories flashing through my mind. Our initial visit was the first new Adventure we journeyed to after Buster had passed. Our hearts were heavy but it was wonderful seeing Shadow enjoy a new Adventure. Both our trips occurred on December days. On our trip yesterday we were pleased to see the sun was out, although not ideal for photographs, it definitely lead to the perfect beach day. We began our visit traversing the trail along the coast. We stopped at the docks, and at the beach areas along the way. The sand was covered with shells, and the sun beautifully shimmering on the sea. We took our time, Shadow and Wilma enjoying some rolls, digging, and play-time along the way.

After traversing the trails, and exploring the beach areas we wandered around Fort Pickering. The Fort was simple, but scenic, lots of crannies to explore. We walked around the area before heading back to the trails along the shore. The trails wound up and down along the coast, and above the Fort. Trees lined the trails, making for picturesque scene, although dull Winter brown, pops of red were found here and there. We veered off to the rocks several times checking out the lovely view.

We then continued to the wreath adorned lighthouse, practicing poses for our Christmas card. We hopped from rock to rock, getting as close to the lighthouse as possible. After stopping at various views we then returned to the larger beach area to relax, swim, dig, and run. The waves and seagulls creating a lovely, therapeutic song.

Although the Park was quite simple, we had a wonderful afternoon in the sun. There were few visitors to the Park, the perfect off-season perk. We definitely chose the perfect afternoon to explore Winter Island Park. (Rating: 3).

Throwback Adventure – Portland Breakwater Lighthouse/Bug Light – February 2018

In February 2018 Shadow, Wilma, my Mom, and I Adventured to the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse in Portland, Maine. This Lighthouse if often referred to as “Bug Light” due its small size. The Portland Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1875 and is known as one of the fancier lighthouses in Maine. It is an active lighthouse, and is located in Bug Light Park, providing views of the Casco Bay.

We had an enjoyable Adventure The Portland Breakwater Lighthouse. The Lighthouse was located in a small and simple park, just a short walk from our car. We were pleased to get an up-close and personal view of the lighthouse, as we walked right up to and around this lovely structure. The lighthouse was very picturesque, bright white in color with decorative columns. We spent some time taking photographs before heading off to our next Adventure. We were pleased to view the lovely, and unique Portland Breakwater Lighthouse (Rating: 3).

Throwback Adventure – Fort Williams Park – July 2017

In July 2017 Shadow, Wilma, My Mom and I visited Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Fort Williams Park is a 90 acres Park located in the Casco Bay. It includes: the Portland Head Lighthouse and museum, beautiful coastal views, and historic ruins. It was formerly a United States Army Fort, but in 1979 became designated as Fort Williams State Park.

We had a short, yet wonderful visit to Fort Williams State Park. It was especially exciting as it was Wilma’s first trip to Maine! We started our journey with the Portland Head Lighthouse, a beautiful lighthouse, providing a close-up, and personal view. We spent some time near the lighthouse, taking in the moments, and the gorgeous scenery. We then were elated to see a sign for Gelatos, but yet soon disappointed that it was closed. Oh well, we were on to the magnificent coastal views, so no complaining here! There were splendid wild flowers and benches along the trails, a peaceful oasis. Definitely not lacking stunning scenery for some photographs.

From there we headed to the ruins. I do not believe I captured all the areas in photographs, but snapped some quick one of Goddard Mansion, on the hill above. It was beginning to get dark, but I did my best to capture this incredible mansion ruins. A new Adventure for Shadow, and the beginning of Wilma’s many adventures to come (Rating: 4).

Throwback Adventure – July 2016/November 2017 – Old Scituate Lighthouse

In July 2016 Shadow, Buster and I visited the Old Scituate Lighthouse, while in November 2017 Shadow, Wilma and I returned to visit the Old Scituate Lighthouse in Scituate, Massachusetts. The Old Scituate Lighthouse is also referred to as Scituate Light. It is a historic lighthouse which was built in 1811, later being purchased by the town of Scituate. It is located at Cedar Point in Scituate Harbor, and as expected is a popular location for painters.

We have enjoyed our trips to the Old Scituate Lighthouse. It is a special location, which allows a close-up view of a coastal New England Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is located directly on the shore, enabling visitors to go down to the water’s edge. It is gorgeous, and picturesque, providing a genuine New England experience. I loved our first visit to the Lighthouse, so decided to take some holiday photographs for our most recent holiday card. Therefore you may have a giggle or two as you view some humorous photographs, of course along with a fabulous landmark. I highly recommend a visit to this spectacular lighthouse in Scituate (Rating: 5).

Throwback Adventure – Beavertail State Park (Includes the Beavertail Lighthouse) – August 2016

I will have sections of my blog that I will title “Flashback Adventure”, and will plan on posting them every Thursday. These are journeys we have taken before I started the blog, but are well worth sharing.

In August 2016, Shadow, Buster, and I journeyed to the Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, RI. As many of you know Buster has passed away since, but he definitely enjoyed his share of adventures. He was an amazing boy, and will always be missed.

Beavertail State Park is a Rhode Island State Park that encompasses 153 acres. It is located at the Southern end of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, and is well known for its beautiful, scenic coastline. On the site you can view the Beavertail Lighthouse, a 64 foot lighthouse, built in 1856. There even is a museum and a gift shop at the site.

We visited Beavertail State Park on a warm summer day. Our time included: a hike along the coastline, wandering around the lighthouse, naps on the rocks, and dips in the ocean. We spent a large amount of time lounging along the shore, taking in the sounds of the crashing waves. In addition, we especially appreciated the uniquely structured lighthouse. Definitely a relaxing, coastal day in Jamestown. (Rating: 4).

Throwback Adventure – Neddick “Nubble” Lighthouse, Maine – September 2013 and February 2018

In September 2013, Shadow, Buster, my Mom, and I visited Neddick Lighthouse, and in February 2018, Shadow, Wilma, my Mom, and I visited Neddick Lighthouse. As many of you know Buster has passed away since, but he definitely enjoyed his share of adventures. He was an amazing boy, and will always be missed!

Cape Neddick “Nubble” Lighthouse is located in Cape Neddick, York, Maine. It is on Nubble Island off of Cape Neddick point. It was initially put into use in 1879, and continues to be a working lighthouse. The area is popular for visitors, and even has a small gift shop and restrooms (available in season).

We enjoyed our visits to this beautiful, scenic lighthouse. It is the perfect place to take photographs, sit on a bench and enjoy the breeze, lounge in the grass, or jump from rock to rock along the ocean shore. It really is a true New England landmark (Rating: 4).
