May 6, 2019 – Stevens-Coolidge Place – Massachusetts

Tonight Shadow, Wilma, My Mom, and I Adventured to the Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Stevens-Coolidge Place is owned and managed by the Trustees of Reservations. It is a garden and a historic home that includes a museum. The past residents included the Stevens family, one of the founder families of North Andover.

We had a floral Adventure to the Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover, Massachusetts. I was excited to start Mother’s Day week spending time with my amazing Mother. She has joined us on many of our Adventures, and we were excited to explore a garden location on a lovely spring evening. I had been curious about the Stevens-Coolidge Place for some time, having seen that it was a dog-friendly garden area and also not far from home. I had read that they had a recent tulip event, so was hopeful for lots of beautiful color and blooms. I think my expectations were a bit high as I thought there would be numerous flowers all over the property. However, there were only small amounts of blooms, although still gorgeous. We wandered around to different areas finding a singing fountain, appreciating the lineal landscape, and enjoying the architecture of the home. Our favorite feature was the gorgeous center area that had tulips of all colors.

We took many photographs, had lots of laughter, and enjoyed breathing in the fresh spring air. It was so nice to see the sun, something we have not seen for awhile in Massachusetts. Throughout the evening Shadow and Wilma participated in many rolls and appreciated any and all guest attention. Simple but just perfect. We might just have to come back for a visit when there are more blooms (Rating: 3, Company – Perfection!)

Throwback Adventure – Highfield Hall and Gardens – Massachusetts

I will have sections of my blog that I will title “Throwback Adventure”, and will plan on posting them every Thursday. These are journeys we have taken before I started the blog, but are well worth sharing. Many of these Throwback Adventures will include our Buster, who was known for his crazy tail, his happy howl, and his zest for life. We miss him dearly…he is forever in our hearts!

In April 2017 Shadow, My Mom, and I Adventured to the Highfield Hall and Gardens in Falmouth, Massachusetts. We had a nice visit to the Highfield Hall and Gardens, a stop on our way to our final destination. As many of you know my detailed memories of Throwback Adventures are not quite as thorough as one might hope. However, I remember going for a walk in the Beebe Woods with Shadow while Mom explored the indoor exhibits. We walked for a bit and found a pond for some swims. We wandered around the property, and I took some adorable Shadow photographs along the way. I especially loved the Sunken Gardens, bushes shaped in picturesque style. I always enjoy finding Adventures that include culture and dogs. Although Shadow was not allowed in the mansion, there were many opportunities to explore. It appears I only took a few photographs, but a brief summary of our stop at the Highland Hall and Gardens. So glad we could visit this unique location.

April 27, 2019 – Viles Arboretum – Maine

Today Shadow, Wilma, and I Adventured to Viles Arboretum in Augusta, Maine. Viles Arboretum is made up of 224 acres of property including six miles of trails, gardens, an art/sculpture trail, and many special events and activities. There is a Visitor Center and a gift shop which are open during week days.

We had a drenching Adventure to the Viles Arboretum on yet another dreary New England day. I was excited to find the Arboretum, a location that many times is not open to my furry friends. Upon arrival we were disappointed to find the trail maps were gone, so decided to stroll around and see what we could find. There were numerous sculptures that captured our attention and guided us on our walk. We ambled along the paths, sinking into thick water and mud. However, we did not let this stop us and continued on checking out the art and landscape along the way. There were vibrant signs identifying what soon will be lots of green and flowering areas. There were gorgeous birch trees, tulips, forsythias, and a large white flowering tree. There were many labels for trails, yet without a map it was not clear as where they may lead. The Arboretum appeared to be endless with trails in many directions. We spent about an hour walking, and exploring. I am positive that the Viles Arboretum will be quite breathtaking as the buds bloom. It was definitely a unique spot which we hope to explore again in the future (Rating: 3).

April 16, 2019 – The Meredith Sculpture Walk – New Hampshire

GToday Shadow, Wilma, and I Adventured to The Meredith Sculpture Walk in Meredith, New Hampshire. The sculpture walk is an exhibit of sculptures place throughout the town of Meredith. The sculptures are created from artists in the Northeast and are located in areas including: Main Street, The Mill Falls Marketplace, and along Lake Winnipesaukee in Hesky and Scenic Parks. There are 32 sculptures along the walk. The sculptures are changed over time.

We had an educational Adventure to The Meredith Sculpture Walk in Meredith, New Hampshire. I was feeling uncreative this morning pondering where to take an Adventure and was quite pleased when I located the Meredith Sculpture Walk in an online search. There was a map available online, so our journey was set! Upon arrival I was thrilled stumble on a brochure of the walk that included photos and information on the sculptures almost right where we parked. This was so helpful as trying to use a phone for a map, and photos would have been a cumbersome feat.

The sculpture walk started on Main Street, soon weaving through a cobblestone store area, and crossing over the main road before beginning a walk along Lake Winnipesaukee, scenic mountains framing the Lake. The structures were overall very clear to find, and the photos on the map really helped you to spot which one was next. I posed Shadow and Wilma by many of the statues. Wilma had entertaining moments with the sculptures, in some cases being nervous, while in one case even appearing to believe statue was a real person, so excited to greet “Archie”. Shadow, having seen it all before, appeared to enjoy the walk and smells along the way, even enjoying his happy rolls. I felt like a kid again, almost like a mystery to find each and every statue. There was only one that we had trouble, but in the end located all 32. And of course, as you may guess my favorite sculptures were the animals!

There were so many lovely parts to this walk besides the structures themselves. We wandered across an adorable blue bridge, and docks throughout. There were ducks along the way, benches, and some beautiful birth trees. There were beautiful flower buds about to burst, winding trails through the park, and lovely landscaping. We even found a man-made waterfall, and an over-sized patio chair, creating quite the photo opportunities.

This Adventure was just perfect, on a beautiful spring day. I could not have been happier to find this amazing walk, and have a special Adventure with my Shadow and Wilma. Not only did we love The Meredith Sculpture Park, but were so pleased to learn more about the waterfront town of Meredith. We highly recommend you visit The Meredith Sculpture Park (Rating: 5).

October 8, 2018 – The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University – Massachusetts

Today Shadow, Wilma and I Adventured to the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, in the area of Boston, Massachusetts. The Arnold Arboretum was established in 1872, and encompasses 281 acres of land. The Arboretum maintains a record system of which all plants on the ground are tracked, while research is ongoing. The Arboretum is free and open to the public, offering outreach enrichment to people of all ages.

We had a splendid Adventure to the Arnold Arboretum. So fun to find a local Arboretum that both allows and welcomes dogs. We spent about three hours exploring the trails, paths, and roads throughout the park. The gates were closed to cars, which was a huge plus. We begin our journey heading toward the Fog x Hill, containing a “fog sculpture” made up of pure water vapor. Little did I know at the time that this was a man made feature, so quite magical at fog appeared to have taken over the trail. I tried to capture this on film, but we arrived close to the location when the fog was almost dispersed. Still a fun and unique “show” that captivated our attention.

Next we headed toward the Leventritt Shrub and Vine Garden, walking along a trail through the woods, along a scenic wooden fence. On arrival to this Garden the area opened up and we headed toward the Garden. Our ear was drawn to peaceful Asian music and the dance of two performing their cultural art. The music was relaxing, calm, and appealing to the ear. We watched the couple perform for a bit, snapped a quick video and headed on through the scenic garden. Most of the flowers were past their bloom, but I was able to catch a couple beautiful buds on film.

After leaving the Shrub and Vine Garden we traversed various trails and areas throughout the park, including: the beautiful Conifer trail, The Bradley Rosaceous Collection, the ponds, and many additional pathways. Although it was definitely off season for this beautiful park, there were still gorgeous scenery throughout. Most of the time you could not even tell you were in the city, instead feeling one with nature. We definitely will have to come back to the Arnold Arboretum in the high season seasons of bloom. So glad we were able to enjoy the Arnold Arboretum today (Rating: 4).

October 2016 – Vermont – Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

In October 2016 Shadow, Buster, and I journeyed to the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park in Woodstock, Vermont. Sadly Buster has passed away since, but he definitely enjoyed his share of adventures. He was an amazing boy, and will always be missed! This National Park was named for George Perkins Marsh, and Frederick Billings. George Perkins Marsh was one of the nation’s first global thinkers, while Frederick Billings, was an early conservationist. The park includes: trails, horseback carriage rides, a victorian mansion, and a museum. It is also a popular location for cross-country skiing in the winter.

We choose a gorgeous, cool, fall day to visit the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. I did not conduct a lot of research before this adventure, so we decided to let our eyes (and snouts 🙂 ) guide us. We wandered around the trails, and enjoyed the beautiful architecture of the mansion, and the gorgeous gardens. There were luscious fields, landscaped gardens, and even some Robert Frost postings along the trails. We also spent some time relaxing in front of the Victorian mansion. It was a beautiful stop, and I do plan to visit Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park again in the future (Rating: 4).

Throwback Adventure – Stanley Park – August 2016

In August 2016 Shadow, Buster, and I visited Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts. Sadly Buster has passed away since, but he definitely enjoyed his share of adventures. He was an amazing boy, and will always be missed. Stanley Park is a non-profit, privately owned park, that is approximately 300 acres in size. It includes: gardens, trails, playing fields, and a duck pond. The park was established in 1945 by philanthropist Frank Stanley Beveridge.

We stopped at Stanley Park after a wonderful visit with family. The park was beautifully landscaped, and highlights of our visit, included: a variety of bridges, an old working mill, the duck-filled pond, an old rustic church, and even a live swan! We enjoyed walking along the trails, and photographing the gorgeous scenery. This was as stop that I planned, but did not do any detailed research, so we wandered around without a map. However, I do think we found some of the highlights of this magnificent park (Rating: 4).

May 13, 2018 – Massachusetts – Acton Arboretum

Today, I wanted to add a little tribute to my Mother on this Mother’s Day. I planned the adventure to the Arboretum with my amazing Mother in mind. I am so lucky, and grateful to have such a wonderful Mother, who has always provided me love, encouragement, and support. As a young child we spent a lot of time enjoying the great outdoors, camping, walking in the woods, and learning about creation. Little did I know I would eventually be blogging my outdoor adventures. In my blog today I want to give my Mom a shout out, and say “Thank you for EVERYTHING you are, and have done for me. I am so grateful”. We are happy to have my parents join us on the adventure today.

Today we visited the Acton Arboretum, which is situated on some of the 65 acres of conservation land in Acton. It has a short trail system, and provides numerous gardens to explore. The Arboretum offers self-guided tours, available for download. It is often difficult to find garden locations that are dog friendly, so I was quite pleased to find this location.

We enjoyed our time at the Arboretum on another beautiful Spring Day. It is early in the garden season, but we still found beautiful landscapes and floral color to photograph. The trails included some bridges, and boardwalks, and lots of little benches to sit, and relax. Shadow enjoyed a swim in a little pond, and Wilma excitedly greeted anyone in her sight. It was a simple park, but so nice to stroll around with my parents, and to enjoy the beginning of spring. (Rating: 3, although the company was perfect!)
