Throwback Adventure – Forest Lake State Park – New Hampshire

I have decided to return to posting new “Throwback Adventures” after taking time to re-post some of my favorites with Shadow. This has been a therapeutic process for me to share. We are devastated that both Shadow and Buster have both passed, but find peace knowing we can continue to remember them through our “Throwback Adventures”. They were amazing boys and are forever in our hearts.

In October of 2017 Shadow, Wilma, My Mom, and I Adventured to Forest Lake State Park in Dalton, New Hampshire. Forest Lake State Park is an almost 400 acre Park with a Lake, and sandy beach. It is popular for swimming, fishing, boating, and picnicking.

We had an energetic Adventure to the Forest Lake State Park on a chilly fall day. My memories from this Park, include: Shadow swims, beautiful mountain views, and lots of playtime with Shadow and Wilma. We spent some time on the beach and enjoyed the scene. This probably the farthest North I have explored. So glad we could visit Forest Lake State Park on yet another Adventure in New Hampshire (Throwback ratings will not always be rated).

Weekly Video/Photo

I am updating my Weekly Video/Photo portion of my blog, due to the devastating loss of our Shadow. The plan will still be to still display a video or photo, usually highlighting an Adventure, while I might also sneak in some that are humorous, adorable, or just other fun dog moments. However, I will be concentrating future posts on Shadow, as we grieve his loss.

If you have followed my blog from the beginning you will know that I adopted Shadow as a puppy, and about a year later adopted Buster as a puppy. We had many wonderful years together before experiencing the devastating loss of Buster at just seven. It took a long time for our hearts to heal, but almost a year later we welcomed little Wilma into our world. As you may know we were devastated to loose Shadow on April 3, 2020. He was 12, and thankfully living a long and pain free life! I will use this section as a therapeutic remembrance of our Shadow, sharing many spectacular Adventures and moments.

Today’s feature is a video of Shadow in Provincetown, Massachusetts in April 2017. I love this video as it shows Shadow enjoying some of the things he loved: rolling, and relaxing at the beach! If you had read my Provincetown blog you may have seen this video, but I could not resist sharing again. It really makes me smile. Here is my beach bum…my Shadow!

May 15, 2020 – Mill Hill – Massachusetts

Today Wilma and I Adventured to the Mill Hill property in Littleton, Massachusetts. Mill Hill is part of the Littleton Conservation Land. It is less than 30 acres in size and borders Beaver Brook. There are several trails on the property, and a picnic area on top of the hill. As expected the property is popular for walking, and picnicking.

We had a warm Adventure to Mill Hill on what appeared to me to be the warmest day this year. We arrived at this property to find a small parking lot, only large enough for about three cars, and we were lucky number three. We began on the trail eager to explore and be out on a walk. The trail was simple, and monotonous. There were many swarming bugs throughout our walk but I was quite thankful that they were not biting, and we carried on.

On part of our walk we could hear the very small brook singing, although overall the sounds of the nearby highway was predominant. There were large rocks for Wilma to jump on, and I was thrilled to see all the green leaves high above the woodlands. The only other color I found was a few purple violets. On our walk we located two old chimneys, and the picnic area on the hill. As per our usual we made sure to explore every trail on the property. Wilma was very hot, and her adorable tongue made for the perfect selfie! It was nice to see her drinking and wading in the little streams. That moment made me smile thinking of our Shadow, who would undoubtedly be laying in the steam soaking up every inch!

I was quite unimpressed with Mill Hill, however my research beforehand indicated that would be the case. We still enjoyed an energetic walk and more signs of spring. One spectacular thing about New England is that you appreciate those little things, as simple as trees with leaves. So although it is unlikely we will be back to Mill Hill, we were glad embark on a new Adventure (Rating: 2)

Throwback Adventure – Honeymoon Island State Park – Florida

In remembering our Shadow I decided to re-post some of our favorite Adventures on our “Throwback Adventure” Thursdays. Shadow had amazing solo Adventures, Adventures with Buster, and Adventures with Wilma. He was one lucky boy! The post today was of Shadow and Buster’s Adventures at Honeymoon Island State Park in Florida. This was a beach we visited regularly during our years in Tampa, and brings back special memories. Please see below for my original post.

I will have sections of my blog that I will title “Throwback Adventure”, and will plan on posting them every Thursday. These are journeys we have taken before I started the blog, but are well worth sharing. Many of these Throwback Adventures will include our Buster, who was known for his crazy tail, his happy howl, and his zest for life. We miss him dearly…he is forever in our hearts!

Shadow, Buster, and I had regular Adventures to Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, Florida. As suggested Honeymoon Island State Park is a Florida State Park located on Honeymoon Island. The Park is 385 acres and has four miles of beaches and many more acres submerged. There are trails to walk and a variety of beaches, one being dog friendly. The Island is popular for swimming, hiking, biking, and shelling.

We had just about weekly Adventures to Honeymoon Island State Park, which quickly became our favorite dog friendly beach, and really one of our favorite spots in general. I think every person that came to visit us in Florida had at least one visit to this gorgeous beach. We even took Christmas photographs there one year, our New England friends and family noting it looked like we were posing in the snow. Beautiful white sand, perfect water temperature, and of course warm and sunny Florida weather. Definitely a perfect tropical retreat! I termed one of the other beaches on the Island as the “shell” beach, which we quickly stopped visiting with Shadow and Buster joined our world. However, a wonderful stop for those in search of the perfect shell, or a scenic swinging bench.

Our typical visit to Honeymoon Island included walking along the beach, swimming, resting in the sand, digging, and of course energetic play sessions. Shadow and Buster used to playfully argue over the holes they dug both thrilled, and energized by this entertaining game. Such a fun memory of our lives in Florida. The only downside was an encounter with a rattlesnake one visit, and an occasional burr on the path to the beach, however even these moments come together to create a spectacular Adventure. If you are ever in the Tampa area, I encourage you to visit this magnificent Park. It will always be special in our hearts, and hope that some day we will be back.

May 13, 2020 – Acton Arboretum – Massachusetts

Today Wilma, My Mom, and I Adventured to the Acton Arboretum in Acton, Massachusetts. This was our second Adventure to the Acton Arboretum as My parents, Shadow, Wilma, and I visited exactly two years ago. The Acton Arboretum which is situated on some of the 65 acres of conservation land in Acton. It has a short trail system, and provides numerous gardens to explore. The Arboretum offers self-guided tours, available for download.

We had a colorful Adventure to the Acton Arboretum. I decided to blog again about this Arboretum as it has been two years since our last visit. We had quite the challenge finding parking as spots were greatly reduced due to COVID. This was quite frustrating, but after a very long delay in plans we were able to locate a parking spot…let the relaxation and floral therapy begin!!

We took our time slowly exploring various corners of the park, both My Mom and I snapping constant photographs. We had no route, no plan, and no map, appreciating the spontaneity of the moments. The Park had many blooms, although was still in the early phases of spring. I absolutely loved the boardwalks, ponds, and a bright red bridge. There were benches along the route allowing one to stop and appreciate the gardens. One of my favorite parts was a trail through the woods that included boardwalks and was scattered with bright yellow Celandine, blue bells, and various other wildflowers. The colors were vibrant and just spectacular. Along the way we saw several animals including a Baltimore Oriole, radiantly orange, and a sweet little turtle relaxing in the pond.

Throughout the evening Wilma enjoyed screaming at the squirrels (yes literally!), posing as requested, and becoming overzealous at the sight of any furry friend. We spent about two and a half hours exploring, enjoying great company and appreciating all the sights and smells of spring. Such a simple, but lovely place. I expect we will be the Arboretum again, hopefully long before another two years (Rating: 4).

May 9, 2020 -Studio 80 + Sculpture Grounds – Connecticut

Yesterday Wilma, and I Adventured to the Studio 80 + Sculpture Grounds in Old Lyme, Connecticut. As expected Studio 80+Sculpture Grounds is a Studio and outdoor Sculpture Ground, dedicated to arts education and appreciation. The Studio is open by appointment while the Grounds are open 365 days per year. The Sculptures on the Grounds are available for purchase.

We had a colorful Adventure to the Studio 80 + Sculpture Grounds on a breezy May day. I was excited to discover a new Sculpture Grounds to explore. We wandered through the woodsy section of the Grounds, appreciating sculptures in many directions. The Grounds were small, but had no shortage of sculptures to admire. The Grounds abutted a “waterfront” which I am guessing was the Lieutenant River. We wandered over to the water’s edge, and Wilma enjoyed posing on a bench, intently watching the fisherman from afar. It was a simple yet beautiful scene. One aspect I appreciated about the grounds were signs pointing to different locations identifying sections of the Sculpture Grounds (example: secret garden, waterfront…). I thought this was a fun, and artsy way to add character to the lovely display of artwork.

Throughout our visit Wilma was thrilled to roll around in the grass, and eager to explore. I had many flashes of our Shadow, as he would have been rolling alongside little Wilma, bittersweet! Wilma appeared curious about some of the sculptures but had no moments of fear to these unexpected structures. We sauntered throughout the property several times to ensure we did not miss one of these special creations. We really loved our Adventure to the 80 + Sculpture Grounds and thank them for allowing dog-friendly guests (Rating: 4).

May 9, 2020 – Fitzgerald Road/Blackwell Brook Covered Bridge – Connecticut

Yesterday Wilma and I Adventured to the Blackwell Brook/Fitzgerald Covered Bridge in Brooklyn, Connecticut. This covered bridge was just built in 2010 repairing the original bridge which was was constructed in 1986. The Bridge crosses the Blackwell Brook, and is said to be the only one in Northeastern Connecticut.

We had a scenic Adventure to the Fitgerald Road/Blackwell Brook Covered Bridge. We found the Bridge in a gorgeous residential area, the Brook rushing below. The Bridge was in a quiet location, providing the ability to walk under and check out the views from the windows. We did see numerous trespassing signs so were not able to take a photograph from the Brook. However we enjoyed the peaceful oasis and snapped some photographs from the ends, and under the Bridge. So glad we could visit the Fitzgerald Road/Blackwell Brook Covered Bridge today (Rating: 4).

May 9, 2020 – Gillette Castle State Park – Connecticut

Today Wilma and I Adventured to Gillette Castle State Park in East Haddam, Connecticut. This was our third trip to the Gillette Castle as we have been there on two other occasions with Shadow. Gillette Castle was once the estate of William Gillette, a famous Actor in the early 1900’s. It was later bought by the state of Connecticut. The Park includes a visitor center, museum, hiking trails, and picnic area. There are even live theater events and walking tours available to visitors.

We had an extra-green Adventure to Gillette Castle State Park. I debated blogging about Gillette Castle as I have blogged about it before, however it has been well over a year, we have many new followers, and it really is an exceptional Park. I had three Adventures planned today but in realizing how close Gillette Castle State Park was I decided to add it to our day. Upon arrival I was shocked to find the parking lot almost empty, quite different then our past Adventures, as Gillette Castle State Park is a popular destination.

Today we decided to spend some time hiking, and exploring the trails, something we have done some in the past, but not too extensively. The Trails were labeled by color, however the online map had no color identification. I soon realized it was too cumbersome to follow the map so we just walked and walked. There were plenty of landmarks nearby, and the Park is not large so I knew we would not become lost. I absolutely loved seeing green in every direction, so vibrant! We trotted high above the Connecticut River, wandered through the woods, and later headed toward the River before heading back to the Castle. There were picturesque bridges throughout, and many choices for trails. The wind was strong, but refreshing. It was really pretty, and the hills ensured great exercise on this trail system. Quite an energizing experience.

After hiking for some time we went over to view every angle of the Gillette Castle. Unfortunately there has been continued construction over the years, and this time we were not even able to go on the porch or get too close. However we rested in the grass, Wilma watched and rolled, and I appreciated the views of the Castle, the River, and the soft texture of the bright green grass. Such a unique and scenic state park, even on the third time visiting. So, so glad we could visit again, and I am positive that we will be back in the future. I will include photographs at the bottom from today and our first two Adventures, glad to share our other visits with our sweet Shadow (Rating: 4).

May 9, 2020 – Blackledge Falls Park – Connecticut

Today Wilma and I Adventured to Blackledge Falls Park in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Blackledge Falls Park is an 80 acre property that contacts trails, streams, and the Blackledge Falls. Blackledge Falls has 2-3 plunges of approximately 25 feet in height. The Park is popular for hiking, and mountain biking.

We had a wonderful Adventure to Blackledge Falls Park. We arrived bright and early to avoid the crowds, and were successful at this endeavor. We began our hike into the woods, a light coating beautifully framing the trails. We soon arrived at several small bridges, and streams. We could hear the birds chirping, streams running, and on occasion a car driving down the nearby road. I had read about the Blackridge Falls so knew we should veer toward the left, and eventually climb a hill, but was very unclear if we were heading the correct direction. Eventually we did and were just thrilled!!

The Blackredge Falls was gorgeous, and grand!! I had read some reviews stating there was little water flow, so was quite enthused to see two plunges of a reasonable size. It was just spectacular. We covered all areas of ground near the Falls taking photographs. One special thing about the Falls is that we were able to get up close, under, high to the left, and to the right and up and over the Falls. We spent a good amount of time at the Falls enjoying the up-close and person experience. Just stunning! Wilma love the rocks, and posed for photographs.

After enjoying the Falls we returned to the Trail and turned left on the blue blazed trail. I had read a map online and noticed the blue blaze did almost a loop through the property. The Trail was someone confusing, with lots of turns and options, but it appeared though following the blue blaze was the correct decision. I loved seeing the contrasting colors of the dirt, the snow, and the green grass, a unique variance in color. Throughout the Trail Wilma enjoyed many rock jumping, and showed no hesitation at crossing the small streams along the Trail. We did not see any other visitors until we were almost back at the parking lot. It is so hard to visualize what we might find on our Adventure and Blackredge Falls Park, and Falls, definitely did not disappoint. If we just had Shadow and Buster by our side… Such a wonderful visit to the Blackredge Falls Park (Rating: 4).

May 7, 2020 – Boundary Trail – Massachusetts

Yesterday Wilma and I Adventured to the Boundary Trail in the Oak Hill Conservation Land in Littleton, Massachusetts. Boundary Trail is 3.3 miles and is the longest trail on the Oak Hill Conservation property. The Boundary Trail runs along the Tophet Chasm, follows stage roads at points, and passes the well-known “Lookout Rock”.

We had an invigorating Adventure to the Boundary Trail. I decided to get up for an extra-early sunrise Adventure before starting my work day. We arrived at an empty parking lot, and began heading down the orange trail before turning left to commence the Boundary Trail, indicated by yellow trail markers. The beginning of the trail ran adjacent to the road and several homes before veering away and into the woods. The sun was beautifully shining through the trees creating a picturesque scene. On the trail we found a variety of boulders, ascended up and down several hills, and walked high above a ravine. Parts of the Trail were quite muddy, but to be expected on a lovely spring day. Except for an occasional good smell, Wilma ambled at a fast pace, helping to ensure quite a healthy work-out.

One of my favorite portions of this trail was the scene at “Lookout Rock”. “Lookout Rock” is quite well-known to members of the local community, a boulder area that provides panoramic views. We sat for a bit on the rocks, viewing the lovely scene. It is always interesting watching Wilma, she often appears to be hearing or seeing things in the distance, or at least alert to what may come. Her sweet, little hound-nose is constantly in motion, not missing a beat. She even appeared to be appreciating the scenic view, a moment that made me smile, and reminded me of a precious memory and video of Shadow and Wilma watching the sunset at Cadillac Mountain.

After “Lookout Rock” the Boundary Trail continued back into the woods, and if I recall this portion of the trail was much flatter then the former section. Throughout the hike we only saw one person, with two furry friend, but noticed no other visitors. Although in some portions there were sounds of the outside world, often we heard birds singing, and felt at one with nature. So glad we discovered the Boundary Trail today, a wonderful local hike (Rating: 3.5)
